Must embody the following:-

  • Spatial Control
  • Play of light and shade
  • Element of surprise and delight
  • Texture
  • Decorative Element
  • Clarity of Geometry
  • Therefore Clarity of Shapes and Forms
  • A sense of Tradition
  • An understanding of Climatic Response
  • Contextualism and Regionalism
  • (Not a passing fashion)

“PORTUGUESE MAN OF WAR”

  • Beautiful in water
  • On land becomes a “mushy-mess”
    Structure – disappear
    Form – collapses
    Colour – withers away

Transporting of Architectural ideas, manifestations, expressions from one cultural and social context or climatic situation to another – may if not properly controlled and assimilated may result in creating a “white elephant”.

Search for clues from among our heritage for a root from which a “tree of tradition” may sprout forth;
And on to this “tree of tradition”, as architects we are able to graft ‘something’ on to it;
To create a ‘hybrid’, which is able to survive in the modern contemporary situation that we have.

We are not talking about transposing a traditional element straight from the traditional context into the present-day context but grafting something on to create a ‘new tree’.
